Bayanihan Club of Union – History and Through the Years

The Bayanihan Club of Union, is a non-profit civic organization founded in 1995 in the Township of Union, New Jersey – USA. The word Bayanihan symbolizes volunteerism, sharing, making the load lighter through united efforts. With the organization’s vision and shared goals, the officers and members willfully aim to live up to the organization’s name. As the organization continues to promote the Filipino culture and uphold the Filipino values and traditions, the Board of Directors, officers and members of the Bayanihan Club of Union inspire respect. Greatly enhancing the cultural vitality in the Township of Union, some of the officers and members take on leadership roles in the township, schools, and religious institutions while fostering volunteerism and willingness to help people in need especially our mga Kababayan. The organization takes pride in being able to meet some of the needs of our deserving mga Kababayan through Gawad Kalinga (2007), Bantay Bata through ABS-CBN Foundation (2008), Tribal Literacy Program of Malita Tagakaulos-Mission in Malita, Davao del Sur through the Missionaries of Jesus (2009) and an Orphanage in Tayuman Tondo, Manila managed by the Missionaries of Charity (2009), to mention a few.

The Bayanihan Club of Union sponsors and coordinates activities that bring together the Filipino-American residents in Union and the neighboring townships. The annual events and projects that encourage the ties among the Filipino-American residents and beyond include Educational Forum on College Funding (February), Hakbang ni Kristo or Walk for Christ in cooperation with the St. Joseph Parish in Maplewood, New Jersey (April), Nurses Appreciation Nite celebrating the National Nurses Week in cooperation with the various chapters of Philippine Nurses Association (May), Adopt a Park in cooperation with the Township of Union (May), Philippine Independence Day Celebration in Union Township (June), Senior Citizen’s Atlantic City Trip (June), National Night Out Against Crime in cooperation with the National Association of Town Watch and the Township of Union Police Department (August), the Bayanihan Club of Union Annual Picnic (August), Bayanihan Halloween Party (October), Bayanihan Christmas Party (December), and Simbang Gabi at St. Michael’s Church and Holy Spirit Church in cooperation with the Filipino Apostolate in the Archdiocese of Newark (December).

The organization also assists and/or participates in the Annual Sinulog celebrating the Feast of Santo Nino at St. Michael’s Church in Union (January), the Annual Santacruzan at St. Joseph’s Church in Maplewood (May), the Annual Philippine Independence Day Parade in New York City (June), the Annual Philippine–American Friendship Committee Parade in Jersey City (June), the Annual Mass celebrating the Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz (September), and many more.

The Bayanihan Club of Union, as an integral part of the community is recognized for the various activities, programs and projects the organization is committed to. In cooperation with the Union Township Administration, the Bayanihan Club of Union co-sponsored the unveiling of the plaque (December 1999) in honor of the brave Filipino and American men and women who sacrificed their lives in pursuit of freedom at the Pearl Harbor. The Pearl Harbor Memorial Park is located along the Stuyvesant Avenue and Johnson Place rotunda in the Township of Union, New Jersey. In return, the Union Township Administration publicly expressed the township’s appreciation with a Testimonial Resolution dedicating a park called “Bayanihan Park” located along Vauxhall Road off Francyne Way (May 2000) in the Township of Union. The Bayanihan Club of Union remains grateful for this recognition.
